RG27-23 (passage)

Sweetgrass coiled with waxed linen thread, attached to a found stone, finished with artificial sinew. 9" x 6.5" x 4"
Up on the Porch Roof, Portland, ME

This project sat on a shelf in the studio for months. The two rocks had been individually woven, and while I know I wanted to connect them, it took a while to find the “right” moment when I felt ready to confront this challenge. The idea of connecting different weavings arises from my summer ‘23 workshop with Carolyn Zeitler studying pine needle basketry. Previous to this workshop, I had always tried to make any work as a single weaving. In hindsight, I am not sure why I held that belief. She opened my eyes to the possibility of connecting pieces and with that, I finally had the vision to bring these two rocks together.

In the act of weaving, I found the finished rim of the “bottom” to be more compelling than the top. This became the impetus for RG30-23 (pod).

Enjoy your day!!
