Basket of Three Leaves
Cattail, iris leaves, hosta stems (twill, twining)
Up on the Porch Roof, Portland, ME
This basket is crafted entirely from plants gathered at or near my home on Munjoy Hill in Portland, Maine. Alternating bands of cattail, iris, and Hosta stems shift in color, recording changes in material and tension as the form rises. The slightly tapered shape and reinforced rim highlight practical craftsmanship and the use of everyday garden and wetland plants in traditional weaving.
