RG33-23 (ghost)

Sweetgrass coiled with artificial sinew and waxed linen thread, attached to a found stone, finished with artificial sinew.
13" x 11" x 2.5"
Up on the Porch Roof, Portland, ME

This is the last piece completed in 2023!

This piece was an experiment to study thread thicknesses to see what sort of resonance would happen as their ply (thickness) was diminished. The center of this piece starts with a solid wrap of artificial sinew. It transitions to a chain stitch of sinew, and then “thins” to a 7-ply white waxed linen thread (which feels a lot like cotton twine!). After a few rows of 7-ply, a 4-ply is used, and finally a 2-ply. The result is much more subtle than I expected. The bowl is larger than any other I’ve done before.

Experiments:

  • Thickness of threads used, both sinew and waxed linen

  • Leaving the start and end of the coil exposed

  • Larger, “island” rock at center

Enjoy your day!!
