RG32-23 (folded)

sweet grass, waxed linen thread, found stone. 8” x 7” x 4”
Up on the Porch Roof, Portland, ME

I’ve come to realize that each piece I make is a series of experiments. Here are the experiments of this piece.

  • Holes drilled in the stone at a 90° angle to each other. This pattern sets up the general form of the work. In this case, it is what makes the “fold”

  • Attempt to “fold” the weaving. This is a formal experiment. I’m seeing how sharp and/or straight of a line I can create in the form using sweetgrass which is inherently organic and doesn’t necessarily lend itself to sharp lines.

  • New relationship of colors, starting with the bright at the center and adding the more muted at the edges

  • Continued exploration of form (always!!

  • Exploration of balance. This might be the most exciting element of this piece: that the final artwork balances on the curve of the weaving and the “point” of the stone. This gives the piece a dynamic quality, as thought it might tip over at any moment.

Thank you so much for looking.

Enjoy your day!!
