My Mother's House

This work was done in celebration of Maria Teresita Victoria Esteva Stark's 80th birthday; she's my mother. The 'house' has images of various family members at each window or door, expressing how her house both holds and is made up of family.

The house is a box; here made of white museum board. 2-3 layers of white tissue paper add texture, and multiple layers of Modge Podge give it seal and shine.

When opened, the house reveals 80 brightly colored cards, one for each year of my Mom's life (she's 86 today). Each card is a different statement sharing why we love my Mom, and has text by me, my wife, and each of our two kids. In addition, many of these notes have a drawing done by my daughter who was 5 at the time.

A slot in the roof of the house accepts individual cards, high-lighting one of the 80 reasons we love my Mom.

This piece was exhibited as part of "Architects on the Inside," held at the Danforth Gallery at the University of Maine at Augusta in 2015. Please see the blog post, "Architects on the Inside" for information on this and other pieces in that show and their respective orthogonal drawings.
