First sweetgrass coiling

Sweetgrass, waxed linen thread (coiling)
2022 Stowe Basketry Festival
Stowe, VT

This piece was my introduction to sweetgrass coiling. It was made at the Stowe Basketry Festival in a class taught by Diane Stanton. Dianne is an acclaimed American master basket weaver, fiber artist, and educator who has been crafting handmade baskets since 1977. Known for her extensive knowledge of traditional and contemporary basketry styles, she specializes in techniques ranging from twining and twill to sweetgrass coiling, hexagonal plaiting, and hand shaping. Based in Pembroke, Massachusetts, her functional and decorative artwork draws deep inspiration from nature, family, and Native American basketry traditions. Diane is pictured in the images below sharing foundational knowledge about sweetgrass.

This was the first step in my coiled sweetgrass journey.
