2026 Stowe Basketry Festival
Stowe, VT

Made in class with Diane Stanton

This basket was made under the tutelage of Diane Stanton at the 2026 Stowe Basketry Festival. One of the wonderful things about this specific festival is the opportunity to take multiple classes from a wide variety of master weavers. Diane has been weaving and teaching for decades.

Image of the final basket and process photos from the class can be found below.

In this class, the teacher will be bringing harvested elm bark strips for you to learn how to clean, split, and cut weavers for your rectangular basket. Students will then weave a checker base for this wall basket using prepared inner elm bark spokes. The sides of your basket are your canvas for weaving with black ash, the elm bark you prepared, willow skein, and other natural gathered materials. The class will also include instruction in making an elm bark cordage handle and attaching bark rims.
