This piece was a CHALLENGE! and another lesson in trust (I have to TRUST the process). I had a vision and a plan for this work but the sweetgrass had slightly different ideas. Initially, I found this conflict very frustrating as I wanted the work to meet MY vision. But the process of coiling (stitch after stitch) took the sweetgrass in certain directions that it was impossible to foresee.

Note that the pictures below are of the one piece showing the vast difference between the two ways the stone is ‘held’ by the sweetgrass. In the end, the work is a true meeting of my vision and the material’s innate qualities. I am working to walk the tightrope between these two forces…
